Despite a shaky start, the Sutton Senior Legion baseball team would defend its 2011 Jack Van Kirk Memorial Tournament title this past weekend, registering four wins during two of the three days of the 11th Annual tournament, improving to 10-1 on the year with wins over Pleasant Dale and Grand Island U-Save Saturday, followed by convincing wins over Shelton/Gibbon and Geneva on Sunday.
Saturday’s first bout in the tournament would test the grit and fight of Sutton, however, as Sutton stranded a total of 13 base runners in their 4-0 win over Pleasant Dale.
Sutton would score single runs in each of the third and fourth innings, but leave three runners on in each of the two innings.
Two runs in the sixth would solidify the win, while tough defense and a strong pitching from Sam Griess gave Sutton enough juice to down their challengers in the opener.
Griess would strikeout eight Pleasant Dale hitters, allow just two hits, while issuing no walks or runs.
At the plate, Reed Stone would score the games first run in the third, while Griess would put Sutton up 2-0 after the fourth inning, scoring on a Stone single.
