Just one week after the Sutton Filles earned a four-sets victory over Sandy Creek in the regular season finale for both teams, the Lady Cougars returned the favor Monday night in the first round of play in the 2012 Southern Nebraska Conference tournament, held at Sandy Creek.
At times it certainly wasn’t pretty said coach Steve Ramer, but the Sutton Mustangs achieved a first in 24 years of football at Sutton High School.
South Central’s lone state meet qualifier for the 2012 Nebraska State Cross Country Championships, Emet Fanning, ended his cross country career for the Red Raiders by placing in the top half of the championship run, held at the Kearney Country Club, Friday, Oct. 19.
Following the tough 34-7 loss at the hands of Wilber-Clatonia, which virtually eliminated the Sandy Creek Cougars from gaining their third straight state playoff appearance, the Cougars returned home from the road loss to the Wolverines and close out their season with a big second half performance to down Fillmore Central 25-7.
It has been 14 years since the Sutton Mustangs have entered the state playoffs undefeated with the 1998 Sutton squad taking the field that year at 8-0 and would finish 9-1 after two rounds in the playoffs.
