Sandy Creek junior Anna Paus came up big for the Sandy Creek girls track team this past week in action at the Superior Invitational Tuesday, April 22.
Paus earned three individual event titles and aided the Cougars’ 1600-meter relay team to that event title as well, to be a part of 40 of Sandy Creek’s 133 total points scored in the meet.
Hastings St. Cecilia finished as the team champion, outscoring Sandy Creek 169-133.
Paus opened her day with a lofty win in the pole vault as the junior sailed over the bar at 10-feet to win the event over Superior vaulters Faith Butler and Jordan Duncan, as the two Wildcat vaulters cleared 9-feet in the competition.
Paus then hit the track in style, claiming gold medals in both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run.
In the 400, Paus held off teammate Emma Fisher by just over six-tenths of a second for the win. Paus finished in a time of 63.04 seconds, while Fisher placed second with a time of 63.65 seconds.
The same duo took on the 800-meter field, with Paus claiming gold with her time of 2:26.55, while Fisher finished third with a time of 2:29.7. St. Cecilia’s Lindsey Parr placed second with a time of 2:28.07.
Paus and Fisher wrapped up the day with teammates Carrigan Rempe and Madison Shaw to dominate the 1600-meter relay with a winning time of 4:18.32. Second-place St. Cecilia finished with a time of 4:21.76.
Shaw and Paige Stengel both medaled in the two long-distance races, with Shaw placing second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:43.38, while Stengel was fourth with a time of 6:03.61. Event winner Isavela Kvols of St. Cecilia claimed gold with her time of 5:42.06.
Stengel earned top honors in the 3200-meter run with a winning time of 12:45.34, while Shaw placed third with her time of 13:22.27.
Rempe continued her winning ways in both hurdle events for the Cougars, as the freshman won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds, while St. Cecilia’s Kyler Weidner placed second with a time of 17:31.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Rempe claimed gold by one full second over Weidner of St. Cecilia, as Rempe breezed to a time of 48.63 seconds, and Weidner, 49.67 seconds.
Rempe, Jade VonSpreckelsen, Caitlin Biltoft, and Claire Williamson teamed up for a fifth-place run in the 400-meter relay with their time of 57.79 seconds. Thayer Central won the relay with a time of 51.44 seconds.
In the 3200-meter relay, the Cougars team, made up of Brielle Lipovsky, Katelyn Pohlmeier, Kyler Hegemann, and Sydney Bennet, placed fifth with a time of 12:32.98. St. Cecilia claimed gold with a time of 10:47.42.
Field event action, outside of Paus’ winning effort in the pole vault, added four medals to Sandy Creek’s credit.
Biltoft gained two medals in field event action with a second-place finish in the high jump with a 4’8” jump. Event winner Nathie Krikac claimed gold with a 4’10” jump.
In the triple jump, Biltoft finished third with a 30’0.25” leap. St. Cecilia’s Ava Wiles earned the win with a 32’3” leap.
Two throwing event medals were earned in the discus and shot put, as Ella Crumbliss placed fourth in the discus with an 86’3” throw, while in the shot put, Zailey Spilker placed fifth overall with a 29’1” throw.
Winning the discus was Superior’s Mia Gardner with a 116-foot throw, while St. Cecilia’s Abigail Musalek won the shot put with a 36’9” throw.
