The Nebraska Press Association (NPA) celebrated the best in Nebraska journalism during its annual convention April 25-26, in Kearney.
Clay County News brought home 17 awards, including first place in Division C General Excellence.
Judge’s comments stated, “All around excellent coverage with a mix of hard news, features, business, and community spotlights in each issue.”
Other staff awards were first place in Reader Interaction/Contest with the National S’mores Day business scavenger hunt; and second place in Photo Page of Old Trusty highlights.
Overall, the CCN earned five first-place awards, including Andi Landenberger’s News Photo of an incoming storm that displaced several trees and damaged pivots last July; Ty Itzen’s Breaking News Photo of a combine fire north of Saronville; Karla Fehr’s Creative Ad Writing featuring a baby on a toilet saying “Just Read It!;” and Ashley Swanson’s Front Page design from July, and News writing on county school’s take on property tax reduction.
Earning second place was Fehr with her Creative Ad Writing featuring a graduation ad for Sutton Livestock, and earning the runner-up spot in Advertisement of the Year with her creative Clay County Fair advertisement.
Judge’s comments on her ad stated, “Thinking outside the box is a great way to attract the attention usually gained by color to a black and white ad. Fantastic job!”
She also placed second for the same fair ad in Single Ad - Black and White. Swanson placed second in Entertainment Story with her article on Harvard One Act’s “The Twilight Cone.”
Third-place honors went to Landenberger in Sports Feature Photo, featuring Rowan Jarosik jumping into the arms of head coach Logan Searle at state wrestling.
Tory Duncan earned third with his Single Classified Ad - Black and White for Sutton Public School open positions.
Swanson earned third in Preserving Local History - Story/ Series with her article on the Trauger steam engine tractors being displayed at Old Trusty; Feature Story - Profile on the Schoneberg boys and their journey in rodeo; and Use of Computer Graphics - Produced In House for the Sandy Creek and Sutton football playoff stats.
