Cougars outscore David City 86-61 for conference title, win 5 event titles along the way
On a day that made for great competition levels, the Sandy Creek girls track and field team stepped up to the plate and hit the ball out of the park this past Saturday, May 2. The Cougars won the Southern Nebraska Conference meet by 25 points over second place David City, as five event titles and a total of 13 SNC medals led to the Cougars outscoring the Scouts 86-61 to claim championship title.
On the track, Carrigan Rempe earned two championship runs in the hurdle events, as she claimed gold in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.81 seconds to hold off Sutton’s Camden Mau for the event title, as Mau finished the race in 17.89 seconds.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Rempe beat Sutton’s Madylinn Bautista for the event title, as Rempe finished the flight of hurdles in 48.11 seconds, while Bautista was second with a time of 49.62 seconds.
Anna Paus claimed the 800-meter run title by over one full second with a time of 2:22.36, as second-place medalist, Tara Buzek of Heartland, finished with a time of 2:23.72. Teammate Emma Fisher placed fourth overall with her time of 2:24.43.
In the two long-distance races, freshmen Madison Shaw and Paige Stengel had stellar performances as well, with Shaw winning the 1600-meter run with a time of five minutes, 43.44 seconds, while Stengel finished fourth with her time of 5:47.54.
In the 3200-meter run, Stengel earned a third-place finish with her time of 12:24.06, while Shaw was fourth overall with a time of 12:51.63. Event winner, Sage Holtmeier of Tri County, finished the eight-lap run with a time of 12:20.6.
Sandy Creek blazed a strong trail in winning the 1600-meter relay, as teammates Rempe, Fisher, Shaw, and Paus won the four-lap relay by over three seconds over Milford with a winning time of 4:16.05. Milford finished with a time of 4:19.52.
In the 3200-meter relay, Caitlyn Biltoft, Brielle Lipovsky, Stengel, and Shaw placed third overall with their time of 10:37.49. Tri County won the relay with a time of 10:11.59.
Sandy Creek’s lone field event medal came from Paus in the pole vault as she cleared the bar at 9’6,” to earn bronze behind Angelina Schademann of Fillmore Central who set a new SNC meet record with an 11’4.5” vault, while Tri County’s Kennadee VanWinkle was second with a 10-foot vault.
