Local students heading to American Legion, Auxiliary Boys, Girls State in June

Three students will be heading to the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Boys and Girls State June 1-7, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln downtown campus. This annual event is for juniors heading into their senior year, and is sponsored by their local Legions.

Ebony Tripe of Edgar, daughter of Chris and Kristin Tripe, has been selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. The nonpartisan political program teaches students about local, county, and state government.

Tripe, a rising junior at Sandy Creek High School, was selected by the Edgar American Legion Auxiliary to attend ALA Girls State based on her academic achievements and involvement in her school and community.

During her high school career she has been active in Girls Wrestling, Cheer, National Art Honors Society, One Act, 4-H, FFA, Skills USA, has been a volunteer at Edgar fire department events, and has been employed by Greer Farms.

Shae Eggers, of Sutton, daughter of Kristi Eggers and Bobby Eggers, is a rising junior at Sutton Public School and was selected based on her academic achievements and involvement in her school and community, including speech, media, FCCLA, choir, musical, and one act, to name a few.

ALA Girls State attendees, known as “citizens,” receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure and organize themselves into two mock political parties. The students then campaign, hold rallies, debate, and ultimately vote to elect city, county, and state officials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform their prescribed duties. Attendees not elected to office are given appointments and visit the offices of those elected to share their viewpoints as citizens.

ALA Girls State programs are hosted throughout the United States. Two outstanding citizens from each ALA state program will be selected to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. in July.

Tripp Bracco, a rising junior at Sandy Creek, is the son of Candy Schmidt and Ryan Bracco and was selected by the Edgar American Legion to join nearly 340 high school juniors from across Nebraska, to participate in the American Legion Cornhusker Boys’ State Program.

He was selected for his various involvements at SC, including student council, speech, quiz bowl, one act, 74 Creative, journalism, Hudl, musical, choir, and track.

American Legion Cornhusker Boys’ State is set up as a “51 St state” and each boy learns how government subdivisions operate by actually doing the job. Participants will campaign for offices, hold elections, compete in athletics, and be involved in other varied activities as part of the citizenship training program.

Special lectures and addresses will be delivered by experienced public officials and professional leaders throughout Nebraska.

Invitations have been sent to the Governor and Secretary of State offices for special appearances at this year’s program. National acclaimed motivational speakers are also scheduled to address the entire group.

The American Legion is dedicated to the motto of “Veterans Strengthening America.”

Chartered by Congress in 1919, The American Legion is committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring wholesome community programs, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to servicemembers and veterans. Legionnaires in more than 12,500 posts across the nation and regions overseas serve their communities with a devotion to mutual helpfulness.
