Sandy Creek girls 3rd at Fillmore Central Invite

Cougars score 77 team points as they prep for district meet action this week in Wood River

As the Sandy Creek girls track and field team prepared for the post-season with the upcoming district meet in Wood River, Thursday, May 15, the Cougars made their final regular-season push into the post-season meet with a strong third-place finish at the Fillmore Central Invite in Geneva, Thursday, May 8.

Sandy Creek tallied 77 team points, while David City scored 103 for the team title, and Centennial finished second with 93 team points.

Sandy Creek took home a total of eight track medals, including five event championships, while also claiming four field event medals.

On the track, the 800-meter run proved to be a huge point winner for the Cougars, as Sandy Creek had three medalists, claiming 20 points in the event. Junior Anna Paus claimed gold with a winning time of two minutes, 25.34 seconds, while Madison Shaw placed second with a time of 2:33.2. Caitlyn Biltoft placed fifth overall with a time of 2:40.6.

Shaw claimed gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.24 seconds, to edge out Sutton’s Jadlynn Kinney for the win. Kinney finished the event with a time of 60.26 seconds.

Carrigan Rempe continued her winning ways in the two hurdle events, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.67 seconds over David City’s Ava Daro, who finished second with a time of 16.68 seconds.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Rempe held off Sutton’s Madylinn Bautista for the win, as Rempe finished the flight of hurdles with a time of 48.11 seconds, while Bautista finished with a time of 49.2 seconds.

Jade VonSpreckelsen also medaled in the 100-meter hurdles, placing fifth overall with a time of 17.97 seconds.

Sandy Creek’s 1600-meter relay team earned gold by six seconds over Sutton, as Rempe, Emma Fisher, Shaw, and Paus teamed up to win the four-lap relay with a time of 4:11.93, while Sutton was second with a time of 4:17.93.

Field events were led by Paus, as her second- place finish in the pole vault, with a 10-foot vault, tallied eight points. Fillmore Central’s Angelina Schademann earned gold with an 11-foot vault.

Zailey Spilker placed fourth in the shot put with a 32’ 5” throw, with event winner Catelynn Bargen of Centennial claiming gold with a 34’10” throw.

In the discus, Ella Crumbliss placed fifth overall with a 93’3” toss. Event winner Mikiah Witzel of Malcolm hit the 120-foot mark for the win.

Biltoft finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the high jump with Sutton’s Addison George, and Thayer Central’s JaeLynn Watson, as all three cleared the bar at 4’ 5.” Malcolm’s Marion Teten won the event title with a 4’11” jump.
