Mustangs erase 7 run first inning deficit in consolation game Sunday to win 16-8
The Sutton Senior Legion baseball team opened their 2025 season with a three-day trip down to Fairbury, and came away with three wins in four games to place third in the Fairbury wood bat tournament.
After going 2-1 during the first two days, the Mustangs had quite a finish to the tournament. After facing an 8-1 deficit after the first inning of play against Adams, a lead that would hold up through three innings of play, Sutton went to work and outscored Adams, known as the Hellcats, 15-0 in the fourth and fifth innings to claim a 16-8 win.
Sutton fell to the host Landsharks of Fairbury to open the tournament, then edged out Tecumseh 7-5 in the second round before throttling Adams in the first game against the Hellcats, 14-2, before making the huge come-frombehind win Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, Sutton held a 4-1 lead going into the bottom half of the sixth inning against Fairbury, but the Landsharks’ offense went off, scoring five runs, to gain the eventual 6-4 win over the Mustangs.
Payton Reed held the heavy bat for Sutton, going 2-3 wth a double and a single with one run driven in.
Wyatt Pollet was 1-3 with a single and one run driven in, while Carson Mau gained one single in three trips to the plate, as Fairbury outhit Sutton 5-4 in the game.
Weston Ohrt handled five and a third innings of work on the mound for Sutton, walking just two, striking out six, and allowing four runs on four hits.
In relief, DJ Hajy walked four, struck out two, and allowed two runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning of work.

The Mustangs rebounded nicely in their first outing of Saturday’s bracket play, with the two-run win over Tecumseh.
Sutton jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, and held a 7-4 lead at the end of the fifth. Tecumseh tried to battle back in the top of the seventh inning, but the Sutton defense held strong.
Sutton’s Joey Petersen, through five innings of work struck out 10 Tecumseh batters, walked four and allowed four runs on just one hit.
In relief, Kaleb Ostrander and Aidan Jones combined for two walks, four strikeouts, and allowed just one run on two hits.

Saturday’s nightcap battle with the Adams Hellcats was a hitters show for Sutton, as the Mustangs outhit Adams 13-3, while recording a 14-2 win and improving to 2-1 on the year.
Mau and Jones were both 3-4 at the plate, with Mau driving in two runs and Jones, four. Mau and Jones both had a double and two singles, while Rylan Reutzel went 2-4 with a double and single, driving in a pair of runs.
Caleb Reiners and Peterson were both 2-4 at the plate, with a pair of singles for each; Pollet went 1-3 at the plate.
Jones went the distance for Sutton on the hill, as in five innings of work, Jones struck out eight, allowed the two Adams runs on just three hits, and issuing four walks.

The rematch with Adams in the battle for third place started with the shaky first inning, where the Hellcats plated eight runs, compared to one for the Mustangs.
With the 8-1 deficit looming through the first three innings, a total of nine walks, combined with five hits for Sutton slowly worked the Mustangs back into the game. Sutton plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added nine more runs in the bottom of the fifth to complete the unbelivable comeback to improve to 3-1 after week one and claim third place in Fairbury.
Hajny got the win on the mound for Sutton. In four and a third innings of work, Hajny struck out three, and allowed three runs on three hits, while walking four.
Pollet issued five walks and had one strike out while allowing five of Adams’ eight runs.
Pollet led the hitting with a pair of singles during three trips to the plate. He also drove in three runs.
Mau plated two runs, while going 1-2, Cash Parrish was 1-4, driving in two runs.
Hajny was 1-3 with one run driven in for Sutton.
