A weekend split during action at the Silver Creek Senior Legion tournament led the Sutton Seniors with a 14-9 overall record as the season draws closer and closer to the post-season.
Sutton opened the two-day tournament with a 6-5 nail biting win over Valparaiso, Saturday, June 28, before DCB handed the Mustangs a tough 3-2 loss in the final game of the tournament Sunday, June 29.
In the opener, Valparaiso, behind a three-run second inning, held a 3-2 lead over Sutton before the Mustangs bounced back to score four runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to post a 6-3 lead.
Valparaiso tallied two more runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Sutton defense held strong to register the one run victory.
Sutton outhit Valparaiso 10-9, led by Treven Stassiness, who was 2-2 with a double and a single. Weston Ohrt was also 2-2 at the plate with a pair of singles, while Carson Mau and Wyatt Pollet were both 2-4 with a pair of singles each.
Aidan Jones and Caleb Reiners rounded out the hitting attack with one single for each in the win.
Stassiness worked all seven innings on the mound, recording 75 strikes in 108 total pitches. He walked just one, while striking out six, allowing five runs on nine hits.

During Sunday’s title game battle with DCB, Sutton held the hitting edge, 6-4, but on the scoreboard, DCB gained the 3-2 win.
Ohrt was again Sutton’s power at the plate, going 3-4 with a trio of singles, while driving in both of Sutton’s runs in the loss.
Reiners, Jones, and Joey Petersen all singled in the game as well.
A trio of pitchers were thrown at DCB with Jones taking the loss. In one inning, Jones walked one, struck out one, and gave up one run on three hits.
In relief, Payton Reed worked the mound for three and a third, walking five, striking out five, and allowing two runs. Cody Funk covered an inning and two thirds on the hill without a walk. He struck out two, and allowed one hit without a run.
