As the post-season draws closer for the Sutton Senior Legion baseball team, the Mustangs had a two-game split over the past weekend. A 7-6 loss at the hands of BDS, before bouncing back with an 8-0 shutout gem over Doniphan-Trumbull, which featured a no-hit effort from Sutton’s Payton Reed.
During Sutton’s one-run setback against BDS on Saturday, July 5, Sutton held a 10-6 hitting edge, but four fileding errors, along with five walks, aided BDS in the 7-6 win.
Joey Pedersen led Sutton’s hitting efforts, going 3-4 at the plate, while driving in one run on his three singles.
Cash Parrish and Weston Ohrt both drove in one run, Parrish behind a double and a single, while Ohrt gained a pair of singles.
Aidan Jones drove in two runs with a single, while Carson Mau and Landon Mierau singled in the game as well.
BDS cruised to a 6-2 lead after four innings of play. Sutton mounted a comeback in the final two innings, scoring twice in the sixth and seventh innings, but one BDS run in the top of the seventh gave them enough insurance to gain the win.
Treven Stassiness took the loss on the mound during three innings of work. Stassiness walked two, struck out five, and yielded six runs on four hits.
In relief, Pedersen worked four innings on the hill, walking three, striking out seven, while allowing one run on two hits.

The pitching was on fire big time during Sutton’s 8-0 win over Doniphan-Trumbull this past Sunday night, as Reed’s no-hit, no-run effort would see him strike out 14 D-T hitters, while walking five.
Reed also helped out his cause at the plate with a pair of runs driven in on two singles. Parrish was 2-2 at the plate with a double and a single, while driving in one run.
Orht and Stassiness both singled in the win as Sutton’s record improved to 15-11 with the win.
