The Sutton Junior Legion baseball team entered the Class C, Area-4 district tournament Friday, July 11, with a 11-13-1 record and served as the fourth-seeded team overall, pitting the Mustangs against the fifth overall seed Wymore in the first round.

That opener proved to be a tough challenge, as Wymore, behind a five-run top half of the first inning, held on for a 7-3 win, sending Sutton into the loser’s bracket of the double- elimination tournament.

Sutton then faced BDS in an elimination game, Sunday, July 13, and held on for dear life in a high-scoring 16-10 win over BDS to remain alive in the tournament.

In the opener, Wymore’s five run barrage had Sutton on their heels throughout the rest of the game. Wymore moved the lead to 7-0 in the top of the sixth inning before Sutton could muster up their first runs of the game, scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth. Wymore held strong and dealt the Mustangs the tough four run loss.

Creighton Jones and Brody Borgmann came up with the only three hits in the game for Sutton, as Jones was 2-3 at the plate with a double and a single, while driving home one run. Borgmann delivered a double in the loss, as Wymore outhit Sutton 4-3 in the contest.

Cale Nuss was on the hill for four and two-thirds of an inning. Nuss gave up no walks, struck out five, and allowed just one run on two hits.

Jones worked the game on the mound for a third of an inning to start the game, walking four, and allowing five runs on one hit, while Michael Lockyear covered two innings in the game, walking three, striking out three, and allowing one run on one hit.
