Sutton seniors run record to 19-12 as post-season nears

With just a little less than two weeks left in the regular season, the Sutton Senior Legion baseball team tacked on a pair of wins in three games this past weekend, blanking both Smith County, KS, and the Kearney Jersey’s seniors, before taking a tough 10-3 loss in action against Grand Island U-Save.

In an 8-0 win over Smith County, Saturday, July 12, Sutton held a 5-4 hitting edge, led by a double and single from Weston Ohrt. Caleb Reiners, Aidan Jones, and Joey Pedersen all singled to help drive home the victory.

Smith County gave up a total of seven walks and had a pair of errors to aid in the Sutton win as well.

Sutton scored in all four atbats, scoring three runs in the first, one in the second, while driving home two runs in the third and fourth innings.

Treven Stassiness manned the hill for all five innings in the game, walking just two, while striking out six, and allowing four Smith County hits.

Sutton’s offense and defense continued to dominate Sunday morning, July 13, as the Mustangs needed just two innings to quickly dispose of the Kearney Jersey’s Senior squad, 15-0.

Sutton tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, and then exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the second to post the 15 run win.

Payton Reed, Ohrt, and Reiners all had a double and a single in the win, as Reed and Ohrt drove in four runs each, while Reiners drove in one.

Jones had a pair of singles in the win, driving in two runs, while Wyatt Pollet and Cody Funk added singles to the cause, with Funk driving in one run.

Pedersen tossed a no-hitter at Kearney, and he walked just one, while striking out five, as Kearney only had six at-bats in the game.

Sutton’s final game of the weekend would see the Mustangs, behind an eightrun third inning from Grand Island U-Save, deal Sutton the tough blow. The 10-3 loss set the Mustangs up with a 19-12 season record with five regular season games left to go before district play begins Friday, July 25 in Albion.

Sutton outhit Grand Island 11-9, led by Reed’s 2-3 effort with a double and a single.

Four other players tacked on a pair of singles for Sutton, including Ohrt, Pedersen, Pollet, and Reiners.

Parrish added one single to the cause.

Sutton held a narrow 2-0 lead through the top of the third inning before Grand Island posted the eight-run barrage in the bottom half of the third and never looked back, as Grand Island added two more runs in the fourth to preserve the 10-3 win.

Reed suffered the loss on the mound, as he threw for nearly three innings, walking one, striking out two, and allowing eight runs on six hits. In relief, Funk walked one, struck out one, and allowed one run on one hit, while Jones gave up one run on two hits.
