Several top young Nebraska golfers, including Sutton’s Jadyn Friesen and Chloe Bergen, competed in the 23rd annual Nebraska Lions High School Senior All-Star Golf Tournament June 23-24, at the Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament featured 14 girls and 12 boys invited from those all-class high school seniors who finished in the top 12 girls and nine boys of their respective classes, at the Nebraska State High School Golf Championships.
The Nebraska Lions began the event in 2002 as a youth-oriented project—to date, more than 830 All-Star golfers have competed.
As there were already allstar games in football, basketball, softball, and soccer, Lions thought golf would be a great sport to reach other young athletes.
Focusing on the family, All-Stars were allowed to have caddies (moms, dads, brothers, sisters, etc.) and family and friends were allowed to follow the All-Stars as they made their rounds.
With All-Stars from throughout Nebraska, competitors had the opportunity to compete against golfers they normally wouldn’t see.
This year’s girl’s winner was Kara Suchsland of Minden, who finished with a 151; second place went to Amelia Ptacnik of Holdrege, who shot a 168.
The boy’s winner was Owen Bartee of Kearney, who shot a 145; second place went to Drake Hull of Fremont with a 148.
