Despite outhitting the PWG Seniors four to three, Sutton fell short in a matchup of the Area C5 District Tournament in Albion Monday.

After a scoreless first inning, PWG had three runners cross home plate in the top of the second, while Sutton’s Kaleb Ostrander had one run in the bottom of the second.

Sutton gained one more run in the bottom of the third inning, courtesy of Wyatt Pollet, but was unable to earn any more throughout the remainder of Monday’s game.

PWG won 3-2, posting them in the final game against Ord Post 28. The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to the Class C Senior Legion State Baseball Tournament.

Trevin Stassines pitched all seven innings for Sutton. He allowed three hits, three runs, two walks, and struck out five.

100 YEARS OF LEGION BASEBALL

This year marks the 100th celebration of American Legion baseball in the United States.

According to the American Legion website, Legion baseball was brought to light July 17, 1925, during the South Dakota American Legion state convention in Milbank, SD.

Those attending the convention passed a resolution urging the creation of an organized summer baseball league to be started each June. That resolution was then passed during the American Legion’s National Convention in Omaha in October 1925.

The first year of organized play would see legion posts in 15 states organize and sponsor teams.
