Senior Legion squad powers way to 11-4 victory with two big offensive innings
The Sutton Senior Legion baseball team opened up the 2025 Class C State Tournament on a high note. The host Mustangs trampled the Valentine Seniors 11-4 behind a six-run fourth inning and a four-run seventh inning, to march into the second round of the tournament with the win after a special ceremony renaming Sutton’s Legion field to the “Mike Thompson Memorial Field.”
The pitching duo of starters Treven Stassiness and relief pitcher, Aidan Jones combined for four strike outs, three walks, and allowed the four Valentine runs on six hits.
Stassiness mowed down three Valentine batters and Jones one, while Jones walked three and gave up one run on one hit. Stassiness allowed three runs on five hits.
Offensively, Payton Reed was 2-3 at the plate, driving in one run and scoring twice, while Stassiness added two his in four plate appearances while driving in a team-high three runs.
Caleb Reiners doubled in one run, as he was 1-3 at the plate, while Weston Ohrt, Aidan Jones, and Landon Mierau all singled and drove in one run each.
Valentine’s pitching battery of three hurlers struck out nine Sutton hitters, while walking eight and giving up the 11 Sutton runs on eight total hits.
The win set up a bout with Malcolm during Sunday night’s second round.
