Pender scores 8 late runs to end the Sutton seniors season with 11-10 win

The Sutton Senior Legion baseball team had their 2025 season come to a screeching halt Monday night during action in the Class C State Baseball Tournament at DLD Park. The Mustangs saw a seemingly healthy 8-3 lead after five innings of play evaporate against Pender. The Pender squad outscored Sutton 8-2 in the final two innings to earn a nail-biting 11-10 win to end Sutton’s season with a 25-17-1 record.

Play on the Mike Thompson Memorial Field started slow for both teams, as Sutton grabbed a 1-0 lead after the third inning, before Pender rebounded in the top of the fourth for a pair of runs for a 2-1 lead over Sutton.

Sutton’s offense got rolling in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to post a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.

Sutton held a 3-1 scoring advantage in the fifth to claim the 8-3 lead and looked poised for their second win in the tournament.

However, Pender erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to grap a 9-8 lead, and the led 11-8 after the top of the seventh frame. Sutton tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh, only to fall one run short of forcing extra innings in the battle, with Pender securing the one-run win to advance to the final four of the tournament Tuesday night.

Carson Mau led a 13-hit effort by Sutton, as Mau was 3-4 at the plate, while driving in one run.

Aidan Jones, Cash Parrish, Landon Mierau, and Caleb Reiners all pounded out two singles each in the loss, with Jones and Reiners driving in two runs each. Parrish and Mierau both drove in one run.

Treven Stassiness and Kaleb Ostrander both had one hit each, with Ostrander driving in one run.

Weston Ohrt took the loss on the pitchers mound. Ohrt struck out six, walked four, while allowing six runs on nine hits.

In relief, Jones walked four and allowed three runs, while Ostrander walked three, struck out one, and allowed two runs on three hits.

Pender’s trio of pitchers issued five walks, struck out five, and allowed Sutton’s 10 runs on 13 hits, as the Mustangs outhit Pender 13-12.
