Weekend storms cause damage

Back-to-back storms raged over Nebraska Friday and Saturday night, leaving a wake of damage in its path.

Strong wind speeds were a big factor in the damage, with wind reaching a high of 91 mph south-southeast of Fairmont, and as low as 58 mph near Clay Center and Strang, Friday night.

Sutton’s wind clocked 75 mph, Fairfield hit 62 mph, while Glenvil, Deweese, and Edgar hit 60 mph. Grafton was hit with 59-mph winds in the storm.

Round two of strong winds Saturday night mainly impacted Thayer and Nuckolls Counties, reaching speeds of 90 mph. Locally, wind speeds reached in the mid-to-upper 50s.

The storms ravaged trees, downing branches and uprooting trees of all sizes, causing power outages, and some damage to outbuildings.

When it came to rainfall, the county and surrounding area got its fill. The National Weather Service in Hastings percipations reports as of Sunday morning saw the highest amount of rainfall was in and around Lawrence with between 4.30 and 4.37 inches falling.

North-northeast of Sutton had a recorded 3.46 inches of rain, while Deweese showed between 3.36 and 3.40 inches.

Heavy rain accumulation prompted the Deweese Demo Derby to be postponed until Aug. 23, due to the derby area being flooded.

Grafton, Fairfield, Ong, and Clay Center received 3.01, 2.75, 2.68, and 2.50 inches of rain, respectively, while Edgar recived 2.27 inches.
