Sandy Creek falls for 1st time in 15 total games as Huskies earn 32-24 victory
The Sandy Creek football team’s 14-game winning streak ended in week two, following a tough 32-24 defeat against Shelby-Rising City.
The game was back and forth and very physical, but the Huskies made more plays in the end to take the victory over the Cougars.
It was a very slow start for both teams, as both defenses would get stops and force the other team to punt, but toward the end of the first quarter, the Cougars would strike first with a sack from Wes Biltoft and Josh Spray leading to a Huskies safety making it 2-0 Cougars.
Shelby-Rising City would answer back with a stop on defense, then a score to make their lead 6-2.
On the very next drive for the Cougars things would open on the offensive line and Kaeden Schmidt would bolt down the field for a 56-yard touchdown run, to move out in front 8-6 with 8:43 to go in the first half.
The Huskies answered the Cougar score with a 65-yard score for a touchdown to take the lead back to 12-8.
The Cougars began their offensive drive with a screen pass from Kamerin Sealey to Biltoft, resulting in a 33yard gain. On fourth down, a couple of plays later, Sealey scrambled out of the pocket and completed a pass to Alex Watts in the end zone for a touchdown.
Sealey then secured a twopoint conversion, bringing the score to 16–12 in favor of the Cougars. The Cougars stopped the Huskies on defense and began their drive at their own 36-yard line.
After a series of successful third and fourth-down conversions, Schmidt scored on a five-yard run. The Cougars then completed a two-point conversion, extending their lead to 24-12 before halftime.
After the break, both teams were forced to punt. Then, a Sealey interception allowed Shelby-Rising City to drive down the field and score, cutting the Cougar lead to 24-18.
The Huskies’ defense intercepted Sealey again, swinging momentum in their favor. They scored on the ensuing drive to take the lead, 26-24.
The Cougars were flustered and couldn’t get anything going on offense as they would turn the ball over on downs and Shelby-Rising City would score one more time to make the lead 32-24.
The Cougars had one more chance to tie but with a throw down the field on first down from Sealey to BiltoftShelby- Rising City’s defender made a great play to pick off Sealey once more, to seal the game for the Huskies.
The Cougars offensively had 275 total yards on the night with 135 passing and 140 rushing yards.
Schmidt led the Cougars in rushing yards with 101 rushing yards on 15 carries and Sealey had 39 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Sealey was 10-22 passing for 135 yards and one touchdown.
Biltoft led the Cougars with 102 receiving yards on five catches, Alex Watts had 14 yards on two catches and one touchdown, Schmidt had two catches with 13 yards and Logan Tomky had one catch for six yards.
