In 2009, concerned citizens of Sutton formed a community food pantry, called the Bread Box. Its purpose was to distribute food to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and hunger.
The Bread Box has been providing assistance with food and other essential items such as hygiene products, at no cost since that time.
On a typical weekend, they serve about 30 family units for a total of about 100 people.
With the addition of a freezer and increased storage for food and other goods, organizers and volunteers are now seeking a new location.
Money to purchase food and pay expenses has come through donations from area residents and businesses.
The Food Bank of America from Omaha and Crossroads of Hastings have assisted with donations of food. The Bread Box is open Saturday mornings from 9-10 a.m.
This organization also supplies food for students who request it for the weekend. This program, called Nutrition on Weekends (NOW), sends food for students to take home on Fridays.
The Bread Box has been operating out of a rented facility, and are seeking to rent or purchase a large facility in Sutton.
At this time, organizers need suggestions for a possible new location, and is accepting donations to help complete this project.
