The Sandy Creek girls and boys cross country teams took on the large and challenging field of runners at the Fairbury Invitational, Thursday, Sept. 11 at Fairbury High School.
As they have through the first three meets of the season, sophomores Madison Shaw and Paige Stengel paced the girls in their 5000-meter race, with Shaw placing fourth overall with a time of 21 minutes, 45.87 seconds, while Stengel’s time of 23:53.78 placed her 13th overall.
Winning the girls event was McCool Junction’s Kayleigh Betka with a time of 20:25.89, while teammate Leah Dawson placed second with a time of 20:55.11, with Auburn’s Liston Crotty finishing just ahead of Shaw with a time of 21:26.93.
Ava Hubl returned to action after missing last week’s race at Superior. Hubl finished in the top 30 out of 58 total runners for the Cougars, claiming 28th place with a time of 26:17.32.
For the Sandy Creek boys, a total of 98 runners filled the boys 5000-meter race, with Asher Eitzmann placing 54th overall with a time of 23:22.37, while Embry Frazier placed 72nd with a time of 24:43.77.
Winning the boys event was James Given of Beatrice with a time of 17:57.41, outrunning second-place medalist, Sammy Holsing of Tri County, who finished the run with a time of 18:00.76.
