Fillies have won 7 of their last 8 matches, goes 2-1 in Geneva Saturday, Sept. 20

Riding a five-match win streak heading into the Fillmore Central Invitational this past Saturday, Sept. 20, the Sutton Fillies volleyball team looked to make a run at the tournament title in Geneva.

Sutton held off a pesky Fillmore Central team in the opening match, 25-21, 27-25, before a tough Raymond Central Mustangs team handed the Fillies a 25-21, 25-23 loss, to cut their winning streak at six straight and send Sutton to the battle for third place with the Linn, KS, Bulldogs.

Linn claimed the opening set, 25-21, before Sutton bounced back for a 25-20, 25-20 pair of wins in the final two sets to run the Fillies record 12-7 overall.

After a late night of Homecoming festivities on Friday, Sept. 19, the Fillies hit the court at 9 a.m. in Geneva, and the Sutton squad started out their match with the Panthers a little sluggish before being able to power past Fillmore Central for the first-round win.

Kyla Griess had three of Sutton’s five aces in the win, while Dyvet Fonseca and Lincoln Friesen added one each. Sutton was 46-51 serving (90.2%).

Avery Smith put up 14 assists to her hitting crew, while Elsa Andersen added eight.

On the attack, Sutton hit .258 as a team, while converting on 79 of 93 hitting attempts (84.9%).

Leading the attack was Katie Baldwin with 20 kills, while hitting an amazing .739. Kamryn Steinhauer added six kills, and Jadlynn Kinney, four.

Defensive leaders were Griess with 15 digs and Steinhauer with 12, while on the block, Kaci Yost and Steinhauer led with two each.

Leading the attack was Steinhauer with eight, Baldwin added six, and Miranda Nuss, four.

Andersen and Smith again led in assists, gaining a combined 19 of the Fillies’ 23 assists, as Andersen had 10, and Smith, nine.

Three aces were served up by Sutton, with Steinhauer gaining two and Smith, one. Sutton served at a 95.6 percent clip, converting on 43 of 45 attempts in the loss.

Defensively, Yost and Baldwin had two blocks each, with Kinney and Nuss adding one each.

Dig leaders were Griess with 20, and Steinhauer with 10.

Leading Sutton on the attack was Steinhauer with 13 kills, while hitting .209, while Baldwin crushed nine kills and hit at a high rate of .563. Nuss downed five kills, and Kinney four in the win.

As a team, Sutton was 108125 on the attack (86.4%).

Setting up the strong attack were Smith and Andersen both with 14 assists.

Steinhauer had three aces in the match, with Smith gaining two. Griess and Andersen both gained one ace as Sutton was 65-71 on the serve (91.6%).

Defensive leaders in the win were Griess with 22 digs. Steinhauer, Smith, and Andersen gained 16, 11, and 10 digs, respectively.

On the block, Baldwin and Steinhauer both had two, while Nuss and Yost had one each.
