Sutton piles up 505 total yards, improves to 4-2
Sutton’s nearly 200-mile round trip to Wymore to take on the Southern Raiders proved to be a great way to get the Mustangs back on the winning track following a tough home loss last week to Sandy Creek.
Sutton scored early and often, eventually working up to a 74-0 shutout win over the Raiders and improving to 4-2 with the win.
Sutton’s opening drive was seemingly a little sluggish, as the Mustangs faced a fourth down and four at their own 14 yard line, but a fake punt and the legs of senior Jacob Huxoll changed that sluggish start quickly. Huxoll took the center snap to punt and instead rumbled 66 yards for the Mustangs first score of the game, and after a missed two-point conversion, Sutton led 6-0 at the 9:52 mark of the first.
The Huxoll score was the first of four scores in the first quarter, as Sutton held a 30-0 lead at the end of the opening period.
Quarterback Keith Kliewer found DJ Hajny for Sutton’s second score, as the two hooked up for a 29-yard pass into the end zone to give Sutton a 14-0 lead. Huxoll scored the two-point conversion on a pass from Kliewer at the 6:47 mark of the first.
Kliewer then added the final two scores of the first, with the first coming from 15 yards out with 5:47 left in the quarter, giving Sutton a 22-0 lead following another conversion pass to Huxoll.
Kliewer then hit paydirt with 1:32 left in the quarter, scoring on a 30-yard jaunt. Kliewer also added the conversion to lift Sutton to the 30-0 lead.
Sutton ran its lead to 52-0 at the end of the first half with a trio of scores, all on the ground.
Junior Griffin Bergen rolled 55 yards into the end zone just nine seconds into the second quarter, and after a missed conversion, Sutton led 36-0.
Bergen again hit paydirt with 8:38 left in the first half, scoring on a 20-yard run, with Kliewer securing the conversion run to lift Sutton to a 44-0 lead.
Sutton’s final score came from Javin Jordan with 3:26 left in the second frame, as Jordan scored from seven yards out and added the twopoint conversion to lift Sutton to the 52-0 halftime lead.
Sutton’s youth took over in the final two quarters of the game, with Sutton scoring once on a 16-yard Mason Ehly run. Ehly hit Everett Yost for the two-point conversion with 3:04 remaining in the third stanza.
Harrison Schurman had a 31-yard touchdown run taken away from him early in the third, thanks to a holding penalty against the Mustangs.
In the final 12 minutes, Jordan added his second score of the game, scoring on a 21yard run with 10:30 left in the game. Jordan made the score 68-0 with the added two-point conversion run.
Ethan Kliewer then charted the final score of the night with 4:05 left in the game, scoring on a 23-yard run. With the failed conversion, Sutton secured the 74-0 win.
Sutton had a total of 10 players secure positive yardage on the ground, as the rushing attack was led by Bergen’s 87 yards on just four carries, while Creighton Jones chewed up 80 yards on eight carries.
Rounding out the rushing attack was Huxoll with 66 yards on one carry, Keith Kliewer with 52 yards on four carries, Jordan with 47 yards on 11 carries, Ethan Kliewer with 43 yards on five carries, Ehly with 41 yards on two carries, Schurman with 20 yards on three carries, Hajny with 10 yards on one carry, and Yost with three yards on one carry.
Keith Kliewer was 4-6 passing the ball, covering 55 yards, while Ehly was a perfect 1-1 for three yards.
Hajny was the leading receiver with 48 yards on two grabs, while Huxoll made two catches for seven yards, and Yost made one catch for three yards.
Max Huxoll was the leading tackler with nine stops, Tristan Griess was in on seven tackles, while Jacob Huxoll had six tackles in all.
