October is Farmer Appreciation Month

October is Farmer Appreciation Month

This month celebrates and recognizes farmers; Oct. 12 was National Farmers Day, but the entire month is Farmer Appreciation Month!

People have the opportunity to thank and honor dedicated farmers and ranchers who feed Clay County and the nation.

One in 10 jobs in the U.S. are connected to farming and food production. Farmers include the men, women, and families in local communities who supply the grocery stores and tables daily.

Throughout the years, farming has progressed from the early years of hand-sowing seeds and harvesting to the technology industry we see today.

The commitment that has stayed strong and unchanged is the desire, determination, and resilience, which has been instilled into the farming generations to provide food for the world.

Farming includes a variety of livestock, crops, organic farming, aquaculture, dairy farming, ranching, hydroponics, and the list continues. The days can be filled with long hours, excessive temperatures, days start before the sun rises and ends after the sunsets, equipment maintenance, and the office is temporarily run out of a tractor or truck for part of the year. Farming is not an easy adventure, but it can be rewarding.

What can we do to show appreciation and support to our local farmers?

Support farm families by attending local farmers markets and buying their produce such as flowers, vegetables, or honey. Expand your knowledge by researching a farm topic or challenges farmers endure and how to support the sustainable farming community.

Writing a thank you note directly to a farmer or farmers, sharing your appreciation for their hard work. This would be excellent for a community group project.

Volunteering at a community project related to agriculture. Donating to organizations that support farming or agricultural education to support the future farmers.

To our farmers: The agricultural profession you are in not only provides for others but for your families. The lessons that are taught on farms are by experiences and family sharing.

These cannot be found in books but handed down from generations. Clay County has a diversity of farms to embrace. Every farmer and farm family is important to our county-we appreciate all you do!

Farmers have been hard at work as of late, taking every chance they can to harvest and take grain to local elevators. Here, a group of farmers harvest a field on County Road X south of Highway 41, before unloading into a semi trailer. ASHLEY D SWANSON | CLAY COUNTY NEWS
