Sitting one mile south of its original site of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a historical marker, commemorating the church’s history.
Built on what is now known as U.S. MARC, the church was moved by citizens in 1942 when the U.S. Navy bought and took over nearly 49,000 acres for the ammunition depot.
The original building was destroyed in a fire in January 1951 and replaced by the current building in October 1951.
In 2022, the church officially dissolved and closed its doors. Rev John Eggen, ELCA Senior Director of Annual Giving, led a small group of members and community members in a dedication ceremony Monday, Oct. 27.
Accompanying Eggen was Sarah Callahan, executive director of Lutheran Planned Giving, who shared a verse, information on the church, and led the group in a hymn.
The marker is a mile south of the original church site along County Road 313 (USMARC paved road).

The marker, installed in late September, features a brief but detailed history of the church. ASHLEY D SWANSON | CLAY COUNTY NEWS
