Cougars to 2nd straight title game

Sandy Creek throttles Plainview 53-22 in D-1 semifinal game, will take on Crofton for state championship Nov. 24

Sandy Creek defeated the Plainview Pirates in the Class D-1 state semifinal round on the Cougars’ home field, which became known as “The Hill” to Cougar fans, throttling Plainview 53-22.

The Cougars opened with a huge defensive stop, followed by a Kamerin Sealey touchdown on the Cougars’ first offensive series of the game, with Sealey scoring on a 10-yard run. Kaeden Schmidt added a two-point conversion for an early 8-0 lead.

The Cougars scored again after another strong defensive stop, as Sealey connected with Wes Biltoft for a touchdown despite tight coverage, making it 14-0 with 1:53 left in the first quarter.

Plainview, however, wasn’t going to back down from the Cougars as the Pirates found the endzone on their next drive with a long run and got the two-point conversion to make it 14-8.

After a long drought of both teams not being able to score, Sandy Creek found a way to hit paydirt with a 45yard touchdown run by Sealey, with Schmidt converting the two-point conversion to make it 22-8 Sandy Creek with very little time left to go in the first half.

Out of the halftime break, the Cougars were stopped on offense, but on a fourth down, sophomore quarterback Kamerin Sealey lined up to punt. Instead, Sealey faked the punt and connected with junior Logan Tomky, who made the catch to keep the drive alive.

The Cougars would, in turn, go down the field and score by a Sealey six-yard touchdown run. Tomky put the icing on the cake on the drive, catching the two-point conversion to give Sandy Creek a 30-8 lead.

Plainview then went on to score once again to make it 30-15 in the third quarter.

With time winding down in the third quarter, Sandy Creek found the end zone once again with a 16yard touchdown run by Sealey to lift Sandy Creek to a 36-15 lead.

The Cougars next offensive drive stalled out about the Plainview 22-yard line, and senior kicker Ben Burger came out and drilled a 32yard field goal to extend the Cougar lead to 39-15.

Biltoft came up with an interception on the next defensive series for the Cougars, setting Sandy Creek up in excellent field position. One play later, Sealey ran it in from 25 yards out, and with Burger’s extra-point kick, Sandy Creek claimed a 46-15 lead with 11:07 left in the game.

Sandy Creek would score one more time with a pass from Sealey to Tomky from 10 yards out to give the Cougars a 53-15 lead following another Burger conversion kick.

With time running out in the game, Plainview scored for a third time, to bring the score to 53-22. The Cougars then executed a couple more plays to run out the clock, securing consecutive state final appearances.
