After opening the 2025-26 basketball season with one of the top teams in Class C-2, the Freeman Falcons, the Sutton boys basketball team looked to put a notch in the win column Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Henderson, and that is exactly what the Mustangs did, as Sutton powered their way to an 80-44 win over the H&H Bearcats to improve to 1-1 on the young season.
Sutton led 21-12 after the first quarter and 40-23 at the halftime break before outscoring the Bearcats 40-21 in the second half to claim the 36-point victory.
Five players hit double figures in the win, led by freshman Myles Smith with 17 points. Jacob Huxoll and Payton Reed both drained 16 points, while Keith Kliewer added 11 and Max Huxoll, 10.
Also on the scoreboard were Mason Ehly with six, and Juan Reyes four.
Sutton, as a team, was 32-65 overall from the floor (49.2%), including a 9-29 effort from three-point range (31%). Smith shot 50 percent from long range, draining five of 10 three-pointers.
Reed had a huge night on the glass, gaining 12 total rebounds. Jacob Huxoll pulled down nine boards, while Max Huxoll and Ehly both claimed four rebounds.
Max Huxoll and Reed dished out four assists each, with Kliewer and Ehly gaining three assists each in the win.
Jacob Huxoll, Kliewer, and Reed all had two steals in the game to pace the Mustangs.
