The Sutton wrestling team went 4-1 during action in the Mustangs’ annual home dual tournament Tuesday, Dec. 23, inside the Sutton Dome.

Sutton upended Wood River 44-29, beat Nebraska Christian 54-18, edged past Centennial 33-28, and stomped Freeman 60-12.

Sutton’s lone set back was at the hands of Thayer Central, as the Titans edged the Mustangs 48-35.

UNBEATEN MUSTANGS

Individually, Korey Poppe, wrestling in the 132-pound weight class, and Brian Liberato (190) went unbeaten, with both going 4-0.

Poppe earned a two-minute techfall win over Everett Miller of Wood River, pinned Nebraska Christian’s Devin Wall in 22 seconds, pinned Thayer Central’s Manuel Campos in 1:02, and gained a 41-second pin over Freeman’s Drake Lempka.

For Liberato, he opened with a 50-second pin over Wood River’s Byron Guerrero-Trejo, then gained a 1:03 pin over Ziggy Wasonga of Nebraska Christian. In his final two matches, Liberato pinned Dylan Heine of Centennial in 38 seconds, and pinned Freeman’s Henry Garton in just 31 seconds.

HINRICHS, SCHELKOPFWIN FOUR OF FIVE MATCHES Two Mustangs won four of five matches on the day, with Connor Hinrichs, in the 150-pound class, opening with a 14-second pin over Wood River’s Jeremy Fehringer, then pinning Nebraska Christian’s Noah Faeh in just 58 seconds. In round three, Hinrichs gained a 5:57 techfall win over Woen McLaughlin of Thayer Central before falling by way of a 3:27 pin to Kasten Ruether of Centennial.

In his final match of the day, Hinrichs pinned Freeman’s McCoy Peters in 1:44.

Brody Schelkopf’s route to four wins in five matches in the 175-pound weight class began with a 2:23 pinfall win over Tyler Gotlob of Wood River. Schelkopfthen gained a 1:34 pin over Nebraska Christian’s Chaz Boeder, followed by a 50-second pin over Thayer Central’s Garrett Gregory. Centennial’s Cael Payne registered a 1:16 pin over Schelkopf, before the Sutton junior rebounded for a 1:45 pin over Freeman’s Carter Fricke.

SCHEIDEMANN SHINES

Landon Schediemann earned three wins in four matches in the 144-pound weight class, opening his day with a 52-second pin over Gavyn Johnson of Wood River, followed by a 1:47 pin over Trev McHargue of Nebraska Christian.

Schediemann wrapped up his day with a 55-second pin over Alex Hammer of Thayer Central, before Centennial’s Evan Crawford pinned Schediemann in 3:36.

REST OF THE MUSTANGS

Shawn Westmoreland’s day in the 144-pound class earned him two wins in three matches. He opened with a 55-second pin over Austin Dethloff of Wood River, and gained a 3:32 pin over Nebraska Christian’s Miciah Wheeler, before falling in 45 seconds to Thayer Central’s Carson McLaughlin.

Aaron Sanchez also won two of three matches in the 215-pound class, opening with a 1:45 pin over Wood River’s Adrian Cruz, then claiming a 1:32 pinfall win over Thayer Central’s Jayleb Guthrie. In his final match of the day, Sanchez fell 10-2 to Centennial’s Lane Johnson.

Kade Jones’ day in the 285-pound class earned him two wins in four total matches, opening with a 9-3 win over Wood River’s Landon Hauptman, before Thayer Central’s Cole Vorderstrasse pinned Jones in 1:58.

Jones then bounced back for a 6-1 win over Centennial’s Emmett Crawford, before Freeman’s Noah Fricke pinned Jones in 3:12.

Jose Aranda, wrestling in the 120-pound weight class for Sutton, was 1-3 on the day, opening with losses to Jace Martin of Wood River, Nebraska Christian’s Wesley Penn, and Thayer Central’s Jaxson Bowers, before notching his win with a 2:27 pinfall win over Centennial’s Tobey Kline.
