Action for the Sandy Creek Girls Wrestling team took the Cougars to Columbus for the 2026 Norm Manstedt/High Plains Community meet, Thursday, Jan. 8.
In all, six junior varsity girls came away with medals, led by Alara Sims’ first-place finish in the 235-pound weight class, scoring 16 points along the way.
Sims pinned Sabrina West of Bellevue East in 1:01 to start the meet. She wrapped up her day with a 26-second pin over Danielle Horton- Powell of Omaha Westside to claim the gold medal in the class.
Ashlyn Anderson gained second-place hardware with one win in two matches, while scoring 12 team points in the 170-pound weight class.
Anderson opened with a 3:50 pinfall win over Zina Carrera of Bellevue East, before Norfolk’s Aubrey Nykodym gained a 3:02 pin over Anderson to place the Cougar second.
A pair of third-place finishes were earned by Amber Meyer in the 125-pound class, and by Marelyn Landa- Vazquez in the 110-pound class, as both tallied nine team points.
For Meyer, a tough 3:22 pinfall loss to Schuyler’s Evelyn Becerra started her day, but Meyer then bounced back for a 5:07 pinfall victory over Omaha Westside’s Karly Piendjou.
Landa-Vazquez dropped a pair of matches in her weight class, falling to Wahoo’s Allie Bruns in 20 seconds, before Seward’s Karsyn Spurling pinned Landa-Vazquez in 59 seconds.
Loveah Meyer (110) and Cailyn Anderson (110) both placed fourth in their respective weight classes and scored seven team points, but fell short of wins in the meet.
VARSITY ACTION
On the varsity front in Columbus, two Cougars registered wins, but fell short of medal contention.
Ella Crumbliss won two of her four matches in the 190-pound weight class, gaining a 3:47 pinfall win over Addyson Jacob of Neligh- Oakdale, and a 32-second pinfall win over teammate Eboney Tripe.
Zailey Spilker’s run in the 170-pound class earned her one win over Randolph’s Maddy Aulner, which came by way of a 13-second pin.
