Fillies blast Cougars by 50, take down Broncos by 10, move to 9-3

The Sutton Fillies ran their record to 9-3 last weekend with a lopsided 69-19 win over Cross County and a low-scoring 42-32 win over Centennial.

Cross County, who came into the game Thursday, Jan. 8 with an 8-3 record, was no match for the Sutton girls, as the Fillies raced out to leads of 19-9 and 47-16 at the end of the first two quarters, before outscoring the Cougars 22-3 in the second half to notch the 50-point victory.

Four Fillies hit double figures in the game, led by Avery Smith with 13, Isabella Trejo and Jadlynn Kinney added 11 each, while Camden Mau tickled the twine for 10.

Sutton was 25-54 from the floor (46.3%) and connected on 11 of 13 free throws (84.6%).

In all, 11 players scored for Sutton, with an unnamed player scoring five, Julie Smith and Marah Kinney had four each, Kamryn Steinhauer, Kaci Yost, and Miranda Nuss had three each, while Kali White scored, two.

Nuss pulled down a teamhigh eight rebounds, with Steinhauer gaining five, and Yost, four.

Julie Smith dished out a team-high two assists, with Mau charting a team-high six steals.

A return to the Sutton Dome on Friday, Jan. 9, pitted the Fillies against Centennial, with Sutton holding off the Broncos for the 10-point victory.

Sutton shot just 27.3 percent from the floor, making 12 of 44 shots, but the Fillies were good on 12 of 15 foul shots (80%).

Avery Smith gained a team high 14 points, with Steinhauer and Jadlynn Kinney dropping in nine points, and Kalie White, six.

The Broncos outrebounded the Fillies 28-24, with Nuss gaining seven boards, and Steinhauer, five.

Seven Fillies had one assist in the win, while Mau picked up a team-high three steals.

Senior Avery Smith led the Sutton Fillies in scoring in a pair of wins over Cross County and Centennial late last week, scoring 13 points against the Cougars and another 14 points against the Broncos.
