Fresh off the mats at the Superior Invite the night before, the Sutton wrestling team hit the road for Shelton High School on Saturday, Jan. 17, to battle it out on the Bulldogs home mats during a busy weekend of action for the Mustangs.
Korey Poppe, Connor Hinrichs, and Griffen Bergen came away from the Shelton meet as champions for Sutton.
Poppe duplicated his gold medal run at Superior by winning three matches in Shelton as well, opening with a 45-second pin in the 132-pound class over Alma’s Cooper Quinn. Poppe then pinned Shelton’s LaTavion Dack in 2:58 before claiming gold with a 1:45 pin over St. Mary’s Keigan Couch.
For Hinrichs, his day in the 150-pound weight class began with a 1:39 pinfall win over John Bykerk of Hastings St. Cecilia.
Hinrichs then went on to pin Evan Folck of the Kearney High reserves before claiming gold with a 13-2 major decision over Mason Tripe, also of the Kearney High reserves.
Bergen pinned his way to the 175-pound weight class title, opening with a 35-second pin over teammate Brayden Griess, before pinning Trey Goodenow of the Kearney High reserves in just 59-seconds.
Shelton’s Dominick Larraga fell victim to Bergen in the title match, with Bergen pinning Larraga in 3:50.
A trio of Mustangs claimed runner-up finishes in Shelton, including Brian Liberato (190), Aydin Banta (215), and Aaron Sanchez (285).
Liberato won his way to the title match with pinfall wins over Brian Cordes of Kenesaw in 5:29, and Arapahoe’s Edar Diaz in 3:32. In the finals, however, Kearney High reserve Korbin Soloman gained a 16-7 major decision win over Liberato.
Banta’s run in the 215-pound weight class opened with a two-minute pin over Cooper Toepfer of Red Cloud/Blue Hill, before gaining a narrow 7-6 win over Shelton’s Demarion Williams to advance to the title match, where St. Mary’s Dalton Herley claimed a 9-2 win.
Sanchez’s run in the 285-pound class opened with a 33-second pin over Red Cloud/Blue Hill’s Josh Moreno, before claiming a 10-6 victory over Hunter McLoed, also of Red Cloud/Blue Hill. In the finals, Arapahoe’s Trey Downey escaped with a 6-4 win over Sanchez to place the Mustang second.
Rounding out the action in Shelton for the Mustangs were Landon Scheidemann and Brayden Griess, as both finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
Scheidemann’s run in the 144-pound class opened with a 24-second pin over Alex Gibson of Overton, before falling in 3:42 to Grady Zeckser of Hastings St. Cecilia.
In the consolation bracket, Scheidemann pinned Pleasanton’s Rigen Riessland in 4:46, but Lincoln Schall of the Kearney High reserves pinned Scheidemann in the final match of the day in 2:07.
Griess picked up three wins in six total matches to place fourth in the 175-pound weight class.
Wins for the freshman came over Jacob Balfour of Red Cloud/Blue Hill, coming by way of a 5:43 pin. Griess then pinned Wyatt Johnson of Doniphan-Trumbull in just 48 seconds, while gaining a 4:02 pinfall win overJackson Gehrig of Alma and then claiming a medical forfeit win over Kaden Thornburg of the Kearney High reserves.
