The mad dash to the post season

THE BULL

Here we go...the mad dash to the winter sports season’s post-season is getting closer and closer. I always find it hard to believe how fast things fly by, yet some days, things just drag on.

This week, just before conference wrestling and basketball tournaments begin, the spotlight falls on Sutton’s trip to Sandy Creek on Thursday night to take on the Cougar girls and boys teams.

It’s always a battle year in and year out. A game that you can throw out the records and battle it out on the hardwood.

Sutton’s girls take their 12-4 record (as of Monday) to the Cougars Den to challenge the 14-3 Cougars, while the Mustangs head to Sandy Creek sporting a 9-6 record, again, as of Monday, to take on the 12-4 Cougars.

There’s no doubt that these two games will be a battle to the end, before all four teams head into the start of the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament next Monday and Tuesday, running through Saturday, Feb. 7, at Centennial High School the final two days, Feb. 5, and Feb. 7.

Giltner/Harvard’s girls stand with a 10-6 overall record and will host Elba in Giltner this Thursday night while the boys sit with a 6-10 record as the Bluejays come calling Thursday night.

The Twin Valley conference tournament gets underway this Saturday through next weekend.

Conference wrestling for the Cougars and Mustangs is slated for this Saturday at Tri County, while the Giltner/Harvard grapplers head to Red Cloud for action on Saturday, as well. The Twin Valley/Fort Kearny conference wrestling meet is slated for Feb. 5 in Amherst.

We then ultimately begin the wrestling post-season with district tournaments for the Sandy Creek and Giltner/Harvard girls slated for Feb. 6-7 at Weeping Water, while the boys district meet takes Sandy Creek to Elm Creek for the D-2 District meet, Feb. 13 14, Giltner/Harvard heads to Shelby-Rising City High School for the D-3 meet, while Sutton’s boys travel to Oakland-Craig High School for the D-1 meet in Oakland.

The girls post-season basketball slate gets into action Feb. 16, 17, and 19 for all three teams, with the boys district tournaments slated to run Feb. 23, 24, and 26.

It certainly is that time of year, where the mad dash gets underway, and with the success of local teams this winter, it could very well be a rewarding final run to the end of the 2025-26 winter sports season for our teams this year.

Of course, Mother Nature always has a hand in how the final push of the winter season ends. We’ve seen frigid temperatures for several days this past week, so hopefully we’ll all have good travel weather as we chase and chase our student athletes around the state and area during the post-season run.

Best of luck to all of our teams in the Clay County News coverage area.
