SC girls outscore Fillies 37-20 in 2nd half to win county battle

The annual Sandy Creek and Sutton girls basketball clash was a typical high energy, tense battle between the two Clay County rivals. The Sutton Fillies had built up a 30-27 halftime lead at Sandy Creek High School, but a strong second half by the Cougars, outscoring the Fillies 37-20 in the second half, led to a 64-50 win for the Cougars.

The win moved the Cougars to 16-3 overall, while Sutton fell to 12-6 with the loss.

The Cougars shot just over 37 percent in the win, sinking 20 of 54 total shots, includng a 7-26 outing from long range, and a 17-22 effort from the foul line (77.3%).

In contrast, Sutton was 17-49 from the floor (34.7%), making just four of 24 threepoint buckets (16.7%), while draining 12 of 17 foul shots (70.6%).

Sandy Creek senior Emma Fisher led all scorers with 21 points, while two other Cougars hit for double figures, including Emersyn Pohmeier with 14, and Carrigan Rempe with 12.

Sutton’s leaders proved to be senior Kyla Griess with 15, and sophomore Isabella Trejo with 10.

Rounding out Sandy Creek’s scoring were Morgan Petr with eight, Madison Shaw, who went out of the game in the first half with an injury, finished with five, and Caitlyn Biltoft hit for four.

Miranda Nuss and Kali White finished out Sutton’s scoring with six each, Camden Mau had four, Kamryn Steinhauer and Jadlynn Kinney had three each, Avery Smith had two, and Kaci Yost, one.

Fisher also led the game in rebounds with nine for the night, with Pohlmeier adding eight, while Rempe and Biltoft both pulled down five.

Nuss led Sutton on the glass with four, while Kinney, Griess, White, and Smith gained three each.

Pohlmeier dished out a game-high five assists, while Fisher added three, and for Sutton, Griess led with three assists.

Fisher also led the Cougars with three steals, while four Fillies had one each.
