Fillies hold off late rally by Titans to claim 3rd during SNC tourney

The Sutton Fillies gained a little revenge over rival Thayer Central during the battle for third place in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament, avenging a Jan. 16, 56-51 loss to the Titans by taking down Thayer Central 54-46 in the battle for third place in the tournament, held at Centennial High School, Saturday, Feb. 7.

The trio of Avery Smith, Kyla Griess, and Isabella Trejo combined for 35 of the Fillies’ 54 points in the win, with Smith hitting for 15, while Griess and Trejo hit for 10 each.

Jadlynn Kinney finished the game with eight points, Miranda Nuss and Camden Mau both hit for five, while Kali White added one.

Sutton raced out to leads of 17-10 after the first quarter and 25-15 at the halftime break.

Sutton then extended their lead to 38-24 with a 13-9 third quarter run, before holding off a late Titan run in the fourth quarter to gain the eight-point victory.

Sutton was efficient on offense, shooting just under 43 percent, making 15 of 35 total shots, including a 10-23 outing from threepoint range (43.5%), while draining 14 of 20 from the free throw line (70%).

Thayer Central was 17-50 from the floor (34%), and hit on nine of 11 foul shots (81.8%).

The Titans held a 23-21 rebounding edge, with Nuss leading Sutton with seven boards. White gained four rebounds, and Trejo, three.

Kinney and Mau dished out three assists each, while Griess led in steals with two.
