Fillies secure top seed in subdistricts with 59-22 win over Wolverines

The Sutton Fillies secured the top seed in the D1-2 Sub-District tournament Tuesday, Feb. 10, when the Fillies throttled the Wilber- Clatonia Wolverines 59-22 in Southern Nebraska Conference play in the Sutton Dome.

The win moved Sutton to 16-7 with one regular season game left, which was played Friday, Feb. 13, before the D1-2 tournament was slated to start in Sutton Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Sutton shot just over 44 percent from the floor, sinking 20 of 45 shots, including a 7-21 effort from threepoint range (33.3%). The Fillies hit on 12 of 18 free throws (66.7%).

Wilber-Clatonia, who fell to 2-19 with the loss, was 8-33 from the floor (24.2%) and just 3-7 at the foul line (42.9%).

The senior trio of Kyla Griess, Miranda Nuss, and Avery Smith combined for 33 points in the win, with Griess scoring 12, Nuss, 11, and Smith, 10.

Sophomore Camden Mau tallied seven points, with fellow sophomore Isabella Trejo scoring six.

Nuss led the Fillies’ rebounding charts with seven, Kamryn Steinhauer gained four, while Avery Smith, Griess, and Mau gaining three each.

Griess dished out a team high five assists and finished with a team high six steals.
