Sutton junior Griffin Bergen reached the pinnacle Saturday night, capturing the 175-pound state championship with a 3:34 pinfall victory over Cauy Meyer of Loomis. The title run in Omaha capped Bergen’s junior season at 36-3 and handed Meyer just his second loss of the year. Bergen opened the tournament with a 15-second pin over Sandy Creek’s Jackson Gerdes, followed with a hard-fought 7-1 decision against Shelby-Rising City’s Jett Vrbka, and then pinned Shelton’s Dominick Larraga in 2:47 to advance to the championship match. A year ago, Bergen finished as state runner-up after falling to SEM’s Maddox Jones by pin in 3:06. Over the past two seasons at 175 pounds, Bergen owns a combined 78-8 record.
