Fillies are state bound Sutton girls dominate Tri County in D1-7 District Final, head to Lincoln for 1st time since 2022 season
Sutton’s girls basketball team pulled off a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since the 2021-22 basketball season, and that is take their season to the big dance in Lincoln, the state tournament, by cruising past the Tri County Trojans 49-23 on the Fillies home floor.
The Sutton Dome was loud and proud when the final buzzer sounded in the Friday, Feb. 27 clash, marking the third time since early February that Sutton had taken down the Trojans.
With the win, Sutton heads to Lincoln with a 20-7 record and hold the fifth overall seed in the Class D-1 tournament. The Fillies will take on Amherst in the first round this Thursday morning, March 5, with tip-off with the 19-6 Broncos set for 10:45 a.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Sutton and Tri County battled each other relatively even in the opening quarter, with the Fillies claiming an 8-5 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play.
In the second frame, however, Sutton exploded, thanks in part to a 4-7 shooting effort from threepoint range, as the Fillies outscored the Trojans 18-4 to claim a 26-9 halftime lead.
Tri County was able to trim the 17-point Sutton lead to 16 with a 9-8 scoring run in the third, but another powerful run in the fourth quarter earned Sutton a 15-5 scoring edge and the owners of the D1-7 District Final championship plaque.
Sutton was 15-46 from the floor (32.6%) and hit on 12 of 21 foul shots (57.1%).
Defensively, the Fillies held the Trojans to 10 made baskets on 42 attempts (23.8%). Tri County was just 1-10 from the charity stripe (10%).
Sophomore Isabella Trejo, much like she did in Sutton’s 52-40 D1-2 Sub-District win over the Trojans on Feb. 20, led the Fillies scoring effort with 11 points. Freshman Kali White followed with 10, while senior Kyla Griess hit for eight, senior Avery Smith dropped in seven, as did junior Jadlynn Kinney.
Senior Miranda Nuss added three, while fellow senior, Addison George, hit for two points, and junior Kamryn Steinhauer gained one point.

Griess and Camden Mau both had three assists to lead the way, while Griess and Trejo made two steals to lead.
