With springtime drawing closer and closer, the City of Sutton’s city administrator, Warren Myers, summed up a few items of interest that the City of Sutton is working on plans for.
The first of which, according to Myers, is the need for a candidate, or candidates, for the mayoral position, with current mayor, Tim Anderson, not running for the office again, as he is in the race for Nebraska’s District 38 legislative seat.
Unfortunately, this past Monday, March 2, was the final day to register as a non-incumbent, but according to Myers, anyone who would like to seek the mayor’s seat can still file as a write-in candidate at the City of Sutton’s office.
Write-in candidate(s) names will not appear on the ballot, but anyone can still file as a write-in candidate to run for the open seat.
POTENTIAL SPLASH PAD
The city’s Park Board has been working for a few years now to bring a splash pad to Sutton, and according to Myers, detailed information will be forwarded to the City Council at their next meeting, Monday, March 9, with the meeting set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
A recent survey of citizens in Sutton was to be discussed at a meeting of the Park Board March 2.
There are several potential locations for the splash pad, including City Park, and the Lions Club Park along South Saunders Ave.
No decisions as to where the splash pad is going to be have officially been decided, but the City of Sutton has been saving up funding to go towards the construction of the pad.
CODE UPDATES
Myers shared that he is currently looking into updating the City of Sutton’s code book, related specifically to building and nuisance codes.
“I’m looking to follow the State of Nebraska’s building and nuisance codes to make updates for the community of Sutton.”
Myers added, “The state codes were last updated in 2018. Once we get updated in Sutton, we will stay current with any updates that the state may make down the road.”
FIREHALL UPDATE
Myers confirmed that the City of Sutton has gone under contract with Bergen Realty to purchase the house located just east of the current firehall, and that paperwork is underway to move forward with the purchase.
“We’ve been in touch with JEO Consulting to begin drawing up plans for any future expansion of the Sutton firehall,” noted Myers.
“We have no definite timeline set for moving forward with the potential expansion. We want to wait to see what plans are like, and we need to find a pathway to fund an expansion, through grants and other financial means.”
POTENTIAL EMS CLASS
The City of Sutton has begun to discuss having an EMS workshop in the near future to hopefully help to alleviate the depleted members of Sutton’s ambulance staff.
“We’re hoping that once we have a workshop here in the near future, we can plan for EMS classes this coming fall. It just depends on the interest of what comes out of the workshop once we get that scheduled.
SUMMER STAFFING
Myers noted that the city is still seeking some summer staffing in several areas.
Sutton’s aquatic facility is still seeking some lifeguard staff and concession stand workers.
The cemetery and DLD Park also still have some staff openings for this coming spring and summer.
