Senior post scores 17, pulls down 12 rebounds in 48-33 win to open state tournament run
It had been a long winning drought for the Sutton Fillies basketball program at the state tournament, until the Fillies claimed a win in Lincoln. The last win in Lincoln was a 56-38 win over Freeman in the 2015 Class C-2 tournament, but on Thursday, March 5, Sutton found it’s groove in the second half of their Class D-1 clash with Amherst to pick up a 48-33 victory and advance to the semifinals.
Sutton trailed 20-18 at the halftime break, with the Fillies and Broncos tied at 10 after the first quarter, while Amherst claimed a 10-8 second- quarter run.
Facing the 20-18 deficit, Thursday’s battle at the Pinnacle Bank Arena became a Fillies show, as Sutton outscored the Broncos 16-6 in the third quarter, and 14-7 in the fourth stanza to claim the 15-point victory.
The win was powered by senior Miranda Nuss, as she pulled off a double-double in the game, scoring 17 points and gaining 12 rebounds, all while shooting 70 percent from the floor.
Following Nuss was Isabella Trejo with eight points. Kali White and Avery Smith both added five, while Kyla Griess and Kamryn Steinhauer added four each.
Rounding out the scoring were Camden Mau and Shepleigh Ohrt with two each, while Jadlynn Kinney finished with one.
Overall, Sutton shot just over 40 percent in the win, making 17 of 42 shots. In the second half alone, while Sutton outscored Amherst 30-13, Sutton’s shooting accuracy rose to 50 percent, as the Fillies were 10-20 in the final 16 minutes.
Sutton drained 11 of 18 foul shots (55.6%) and hit on four of 14 three-point buckets (28.6%).
In contrast, the Fillies’ defense held Amherst to just 19.2 percent shooting from the floor, as the Broncos made just 10 of 52 shots, including a dismal 12.5 percent shooting from deep, as Amherst was just 3-24 from long range.
Sutton outrebounded Amherst 48-27, led by Nuss’ big day on the glass. Griess followed Nuss’ 12 boards with eight. Kinney and Mau both had five, Avery Smith and Steinhauer gained four each, with Trejo and Julie Smith gaining three each.
Mau dished out three assists, with Griess gaining a team-high four steals.
The biggest blemish for the Fillies is that they committed 23 turnovers, compared to just 10 for the Broncos.
