Track events dominate at Thayer Central for Sandy Creek girls

The Sandy Creek girls track team battled their way to an overall third-place team finish in action at the Thayer Central Invite, Thursday, April 2, in Hebron, as the Cougar girls tallied 69 team points, with 59 of thos points coming on the track.

Thayer Central outscored second-place Cross County for the team title with the Titans scoring 92 points, and Cross County, 78.

Caitlyn Biltoft started off the Cougars scoring in the high jump, winning the event with a 4’ 10” jump to edge out Cross County’s Ella Clark and Sutton’s Addison George for the top spot, as Clark and George sailed over the bar at 4’ 8” for second and third, respectively.

On the track, Sandy Creek earned a lot of gold, with Carrigan Rempe claiming gold in the two hurdle events, while Anna Paus earned the win in the 800-meter run, and Paige Stengel claimed the win in the 1600-meter run.

Sandy Creek’s 4x800-meter relay team also claimed gold, while the Cougars’ 4x400-meter relay team placed second.

Rempe’s win in the 100-meter hurdles came with a time of 17.31 seconds to edge out Fillmore Central’s Ali Nichols, as Nichols finished second with a time of 17.51 seconds.

Teammate, Jade VonSpreckelsen, placed sixth in the short hurdle race with a time of 18.36 seconds.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Rempe claimed the win by nearly one second, running to a time of 49.38 seconds. Runner-up medalist, Saphira Osentowski of Cross County finished second with a time of 50.24 seconds.

Paus dominated the 800-meter run with a winning time of two minutes, 28.24 seconds, with Fairbury’s Micah Friesen placing second with a time of 2:31.81.

In the 1600-meter run, Stengel’s winning time outpaced the field by nearly 12 full seconds, as she finished the four-lap race with a time of 6:10.55. The second-place medalist was Kaylee Adams of Cedar Bluffs, running to a time of 6:22.45.

Stengel and Paus both aided the 4x800-meter relay team, which also included Emma Fisher and Brielle Lipovsky to the win with a time of 10:35.17, outrunning second place Fairbury by over 17 seconds, with the Jeffs finishing the eight-lap relay with a time of 10:52.29.

Rempe, Fisher, Biltoft and Paus joined forces for a runner-up finish in the 4x400-meter relay with their time of 4:28.88. Sutton claimed the event title with a winning time of 4:21.82.

The throwers’ relay also earned a win in the event, as the team of Claire Williamson, Ella Crumbliss, Zailey Spilker, and Emersyn Pohlmeier finished the onelap relay in a time of 63.68 seconds to defeat second place Cedar Bluffs, who finished second with a time of 65.04. No team points were awarded in the throwers relay.
