Mustangs finish 6th in team race
Sutton freshman Myles Smith kept the heat on the field of over 70 golfers taking part in the Sandy Creek Invitational, played at the Crooked Creek Country Club in Clay Center, Tuesday, April 21.
Smith shot five-under par, carding a 67 to hold off Superior’s Soren Frahm and Sandy Creek’s Keaton Corman, as Frahm finished with a three-under 69, while Corman finished with a two-under 70.
In all, five players finished with at least an even par, 72 during the 18-hole tournament.
Smith, according to Sutton head coach Randy Ahrens, is the first player, in his 30-plus years of coaching boys golf, to score that low of a score.
Smith opened the day with a three-under 33 on the front nine, while on the back nine, the freshman finished with a two-under 34.
As a team, Sutton finished sixth with a team total 355. Superior ran away with the team title, outscoring second-place Sandy Creek by 23 strokes, as the Wildcats finished with a 303, while the Cougars finished play with a 326.
