It’s the festival season, for the 18th time for me

Summer time, is a welcome sight, as things aren’t as hectic as the school year can be, but when we kick in festivals, the county fair and many other summer events, it can be a crazy time as well, at least at times.

As I shared last week, regarding May, the end of June, through July can be equally as time-pressing as anytime during the school year. But in the business world, very few businesses sit idle for very long, not that I enjoy “idle time.”

Hopefully, given the amount of rainfall Clay and Fillmore Counties received in the past week, Mother Nature will “lay off” and go on vacation for each of our summer festivals and the county fair.

If my math is correct, much of the two-county area have received well over six to seven inches of rain. Sutton alone is riding that 10-inch margin of rainfall, which always makes me nervous when it comes to the summer community events, as the last thing I want to see is events

canceled because the Mother Nature wants to flex her muscles.

Don’t get me wrong, as dry and bleak as the moisture had been, prior to last week, seeing well over six or so inches of rain in the area was greatly appreciated, and so needed, but I just wish we could space the rainfall out evenly, and get steady rains more often, not heavy downpours, all at once.

I know my cat, Col. Klink, would agree with that, as he was screaming at me during the two major rainfall events we had last week, so much to the point that I got out of bed to calm him down. Which helped, but he was still worked up when I woke up for good those two mornings. Klink is another story though.

The fun for our staff begins in about 15 days, when Dugout Days fills the Sutton community, streets and parks.

Edgarfest keeps the Edgar community busy on June 26 and 27, before Clay Center’s 4th of July celebration, along with a soapbox derby, and other events, hosted by the Deweese Community Club, consumes the community on the 4th of July as well.

Then comes the four day run of the Clay County Fair, July 8-11 in Clay Center.

We have a full slate this summer, a staff that I hope, or better be, ready to “rock and roll” during the next month and a half, and then we start turning our attention to the start of the 2026-27 school year...because, the older I get, the faster the days and months fly by.

IWOULD BE REMISS

I would totally be remiss to share that the additions of Beccy Tessman and Diane Smith, along with the help of our entire staff, Karla Fehr, Pam Schroetlin, Melissa Whitefoot, Lily Griess, Diane Thompson, Steve and Alan Schroetlin have been a great group to make sure we’re covered on as many bases as possible, recently, and moving forward.

This paper each week doesn’t get wrapped up without a complete effort from the start, to the final delivery each Wednesday.

In this day and age, finding people that want to get after it, bring news, advertising and complete each paper is a team effort.

We have really grown in the past couple of months, thanks to the efforts by our staff.

It’s taken me away from family time, milestone events and such, but I just want to make sure that our staff, the complete staff, is thanked by me, because when I get in the “heat of the week,” I tend to forget to say thanks to them for their efforts.

We’ve turned up the heat, so to speak, with the additions of Diane S. and Beccy, because what they are bringing to the paper is beyond welcome, and the best part, it is because they care, they work at it, and give a full day’s effort to what they are sharing each week.

Thank you for your hard work, even though I know some of you may “grumble” behind my back at decisions I make, I DO appreciate what you bring to the table.

I’m trying to make a trip to North Dakota for a fishing outing in mid-July, but we’ll see if that can happen this year, because we have a lot going on, and little time to squeeze in a vacation this year.
