A piece of living history will ride through Clay County this month as the 2026 National Pony Express Re-Ride retraces the route of one of America’s most legendary mail services.
The annual event begins June 15 in St. Joseph, MO, and follows the original Pony Express route more than 1,900 miles to Sacramento, CA. Riders travel day and night without stopping, carrying a traditional mochila filled with commemorative letters while honoring the historic mail service that operated from April 1860 to October 1861.
The 2026 re-ride holds special significance as it coincides with America’s 250th anniversary celebration. Volunteers from across the country will participate in the relay, preserving the legacy of the Pony Express and the role it played in connecting a growing nation.
Clay County residents will have an opportunity to witness the event on June 16 as riders pass through the historic Oak Grove Station area in southeastern Clay County. The station was located near the community once known as Oak Grove, which later became known simply as Oak. Situated near the Little Blue River and the Webster County line, Oak Grove served travelers along the Oregon Trail before becoming a Pony Express station.
Today, a historical marker commemorates the site and the thousands of emigrants, stagecoaches, and Pony Express riders who once traveled through the area. Standing there, it is easy to imagine the excitement that accompanied the arrival of a rider carrying news and letters across the frontier.
Because the relay operates 24 hours a day, exact arrival times can vary. Organizers encourage spectators to follow the riders’ progress Express Association’s live GPS tracker. The tracker can be accessed by visiting www. nationalponyexpress.org and selecting “Follow the Ride” from the Re-Ride section of the website.
Even for those unable to make the trip to Oak, the online tracker offers a unique opportunity to follow the mochila’s journey as it travels across eight states. The relay will continue through Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California before reaching Sacramento on June 25.
For history enthusiasts, families, and anyone interested in Nebraska’s frontier heritage, the Pony Express Re-Ride offers a rare chance to see history come to life along a route that once helped connect the nation.
