Cougars amass almost 600 yards of total offense in 66-point victory

Mother Nature had a little say so in week six action for the Sandy Creek Cougars football team, as the Cougars, who were set to host the Amherst Broncos Oct. 2, were forced to move their home game to Grand Island Senior High School citing a saturated field on the hill.

With the move also came and earlier game time, as the Cougars and Broncos kicked it off as a matinee performance on the Islanders’ artificial turf.

It certain didn’t take Sandy Creek long to show the Broncos who was in charge of the game, as the Cougars, powered by a 54-point first half performance and 594 yards of total offense cruised to an 84-18 win, moving Sandy Creek to 5-1 on the year.

The Cougars opened with a 22-0 first quarter run, powered by a pair of Kamerin Sealey touchdown runs, the first covering 48 yards and the second, four.

Logan Tomky closed out the opening quarter with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Sealey, producing the 22-point lead.

In the second quarter, Sandy Creek held a 32-7 scoring edge, scoring four times, compared to the one Amherst score via a 16-yard touchdown pass.

Wes Biltoft hit paydirt first for the Cougars in the second, scoring on a 43-yard pass from Sealey. Sealey then added a 22-yard run into the end zone, with Wyatt Hemberger scoring on a 46-yard pass from Sealey with 3:17 left in the first half.

Biltoft sealed the first half scoring with a twoyard pass into the end zone from Sealey with just over a minute left in the half, to give the Cougars a 54-7 halftime lead.

The scoring tapered off a bit in the second half, as Sandy Creek outscored Amherst 16-6 in the third and 14-6 in the fourth to gain the 66-point lopsided win.

Tomky and Sealey connected on a 18-yard touchdown pass three minutes into the third quarter, before Mason Johanson and Brockett Reed connected on a six-yard touchdown pass play with 1:56 left in the third.

Amherst scored on the ensuing kickoff return, running 75-yards for the score with 1:43 left, setting the game at a 70-13 Cougar lead as time expired in the third.

Fourth quarter action opened with an Owen Spray six-yard touchdown run for the Cougars at the 7:46 mark of the fourth. Amherst then added a 31-yard touchdown pass with 32 seconds left in the game, before Ian Zikmund posted the final Cougar points in the game, returning the kickoff from the Broncos 62 yard for six points and the 84-18 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

Sandy Creek had a well-balanced attack in the win, passing for 308 yards, while completing 16 of 20 passes, and the running game put up 286 rushing yards on just 20 carries, an average of 14.3 yards per carry.

Sealey completed 11 of 15 passes for 272 yards, and ran for another 175 yards on 10 carries to pace Sandy Creek, giving the junior quarterback a total of 447 yards of total offense. Sealey had five touchdown passes and one interception in the game, while scoring three times on the ground.

Reed was a perfect 5-5 throwing the ball for 36 yards, including the touchdown pass to Johanson. Nine receivers got in on some of the action in the passing game, led by Hemberger with 84 yards on five catches, Tomky with 78 yards on two grabs, Biltoft with 56 yards on two catches, Livgren with 42 yards on one catch, Hadley Schoneberg made one grab for 14 yards, Alex Watts added one catch covering 12 yards, Zikmund made two catches for 11 yards, Johanson had the touchdown catch for six yards, while Kipton Williamson had one catch for five yards.

Following Sealey on the ground was Wyatt Livgren has he chewed up 60 yards on five carries. Zikmund had two carries for 23 yards, while Owen Spray had 22 yards on five carries, including his six-yard touchdown. Reed rounded out the rushing attack with six yards on two carries.
