Sutton volleyball trips up Tri County in SNC tourney battle

The Sutton Fillies weren’t about to let a second-set setback spoil their Tuesday, Oct. 13, match with Tri County, as the Fillies battled back to defeat the Trojans in a three-set Southern Nebraska Conference tournament showdown, 25-12, 15-25 and 25-20.

Sutton wasted little time making a statement in the opening set, rolling to a convincing 25-12 victory. But the Trojans, who entered the matchup with an 18-8 record, weren’t going down without a fight. Tri County turned the tables in the second set, taking a 25-15 win and forcing a decisive third set.

With the match hanging in the balance, the Fillies answered the challenge, pulling out a 25-20 victory to put the finishing touches on a hard-fought tournament win.

Sutton’s offensive attack was led by Kamryn Steinhauer, who hammered down 10 kills on 23 attempts while hitting .304. Katie Baldwin was right behind her with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage, giving the Fillies a strong one-two punch at the net.

Jadlynn Kinney made the most of her opportunities, putting down six kills without committing an attacking error and leading the team with an impressive .353 hitting percentage. Julie Smith chipped in four kills, while Claire Trejo added two.

Keeping the offense moving were setters Camden Mau and Elsa Andersen, who combined for 28 assists. Mau put up 16, while Andersen added 12, helping Sutton finish with 31 kills and a .256 team hitting percentage.

The Fillies also made their presence felt at the service line, connecting on 58 of 63 attempts for a 92.1-percent serving percentage. Dyvet Fonseca, Andersen and Steinhauer each delivered an ace.

Andersen turned in a flawless performance from behind the line, going 16for-16 with a team-high 10 service points. Mau added seven points, while Steinhauer contributed six.

Sutton’s defense was equally important in securing the victory, as the Fillies recorded 48 digs during the three-set contest. Steinhauer led the charge with 11 digs, while Fonseca was close behind with 10. Kinney contributed seven digs, while Mau and Andersen each added six.

At the net, Baldwin was a force in the blocking department, recording five block assists. Steinhauer added a solo block and a block assist, while Smith and America Hernandez each contributed two block assists. Kinney and Trejo also got into the action with one block assist apiece.

After dominating the opening set, stumbling in the second and finding their footing again in the third, the Fillies walked away with a well-earned victory over a Tri County squad that made them work for it.
