A cool, comfortable wind moved across Harvard on Sunday evening, carrying with it the soft colors of a Nebraska sunset, a few clouds in the sky and the bright lift of balloons that helped create a meaningful moment for the community.

Approximately 30 children and adults gathered at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, for a balloon release at the Harvard Children’s Garden, honoring precious babies and children who touched the hearts of those who loved them.

Earlier in the afternoon, families and community members came together at the United Church of Christ in Harvard to prepare the 150 balloons. They inflated and tied each one, adding ribbon and an information card before several members chose to walk the balloons from the church to the Children’s Garden.

The large grassy area provided a fitting place for everyone to gather. A circle formed, giving those present the opportunity to stand together, express their love and remember the children whose lives, though brief, continue to hold a lasting place in many hearts.

Pastor Dave Johnson of Harvard UCC shared comforting words and offered a prayer for all of the special ones being honored. Then, on the count of three, the brightly colored balloons were released from open hands and began rising into the blue, cloud-marked sky.

Those gathered watched as the balloons danced in the wind, lifting higher and farther until they became part of the evening sky. Afterward, fellowship was held at the UCC, offering time for conversation, comfort and quiet connection.

For the families and community members who took part, the release was more than a single event. It was a shared act of remembrance, a way to honor young lives with tenderness and to remind one another that love, once given, continues to rise in the hearts of those left behind.

“In loving memory of the children who will forever remain in our hearts.”
