Headlined by another big year by the Sutton girls golf team, which matched their best program finish during state tournament action with a fifth-place team finish in the Class C state meet in North Platte. It was an eventful week for several Clay County teams.
The Fillies golf program bounced back from a tough opening day of action shooting a 384 shaving 24 strokes off of their score on day two to card a combined 360 to finish just two strokes out of fourth place behind Grand Island Central Catholic, as the Crusaders had a two-day 742, while Sutton finished with a 744.
I’d say the Sutton program is alive and well after everything is said and done this year.
Congratulation Fillies. Staying on the Fillies kick, Sutton’s volleyball team kicked into high gear last week during the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament. The Fillies won three of four total matches en route to a fifthplace finish in a tournament that was simply loaded with big-name talent and big-time teams in the state of Nebraska.
Sutton opened with a sweep of Fillmore Central before their lone loss in the tournament came to Thayer Central.
Once day one of the tournament was over, the Fillies regrouped and got stronger, defeating the 19-8 Tri-County Trojans, 25-12, 15-25, 25-20 to earn the trip into the fifth and sixth place game with Superior.
In the battle for fifth place, Sutton, who had lost to Superior in four sets back on Sept. 15, put the whoopin on the Wildcats, sweeping Superior 25-20, 25-21 to claim fifth place in a field of some of the best teams in the state like Milford, Thayer Central, EMF, and Freeman, not to mention Superior and Tri County!
Sutton will find out their post-season schedule later this week, as sub-district action is set to start next Monday and Tuesday.
Football wins for Sutton and Sandy Creek this week were absolutely huge, as Sutton dominated Centennial 82-26 last Thursday to move to 6-2 overall and put themselves in a position to host a first-round Class D-1 playoff game Oct. 30. Sutton’s final test is a road game in Murray with the Conestoga Cougars this Friday night. Sandy Creek’s football team is simply finetuned and rockin’ and a rollin’, looking for what is hoped to be their third straight Class D-1 state championship. The 7-1 Cougars simply crushed Hastings St. Cecilia on the road last Friday, 64-8 to win their sixth straight game and set them up with perhaps their biggest, maybe second biggest challenge of the 2026 season, as the unbeaten Ravenna Bluejays come calling to SCHS this Friday night to decide the D1-6 district championship.
If you hear constant thunder coming from “The Hill” at Sandy Creek throughout South Central Nebraska, you’ll know that a huge battle is breaking out at Sandy Creek as they host the Bluejays.
It’s hard to believe that we’re already at the post-season point of the fall sports season, but the older I get, the faster things go.
Sandy Creek freshman Neviah McBride will continue her cross country season this week as she heads to Kearney as the lone Cougar runner in the Class D State Meet at the Kearney Country Club.
McBride will be part of the first race in Kearney, with the Class D girls set to take off on their 5,000-meter run at 12 noon this Friday.
Good Luck Neviah!
