Former rural Edgar resident Betty Alice (Miller) Wenske, 87, peacefully passed away Monday, October 20, 2014, at Brookestone Acres in Columbus, NE. Funeral services were 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center, with Rev. Del Klover officiating. Interment followed at the Clay Center Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m., with the family present from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center, NE, or to the donor’s choice. Condolences may be left at Betty Alice was born May 8, 1927, to Emil and Ella (Lee) Miller in Akron, Ohio. Betty completed her high school education in Akron, she worked for Goodyear and at a movie theater after school and during the summer. After her graduation, she moved with her parents to Lameta, California. She attended college to study Art and Interior Design. While attending College she worked as a phone operator and attended First Lutheran Church. She married Ervin Wenske on May 21, 1950, and moved to Olympia, Washington. In 1953, they moved north of Edgar, Nebraska, to farm. Betty worked as a phone operator in Superior for a short time, then went to Kansas City and became a key punch operator. She worked for the USDA until they moved the office. Betty began training at Mary Lanning Hospital to become a certified aid and worked there until the Edgar care facility opened. She moved from the aid position to helping with Social Services, driving the van, writing the newsletter and helping with many social activities. After retiring from the care facility, she began working as a home health aide in the Clay County area. Betty was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center and continued to help pick hymns after moving to Hastings. She enjoyed being a member of Betty’s Club and hosted many family activities. She was interested in history, current events, keeping the mind active with word search and Nebraska football. She always had a smile, helping hands and kind heart. She is survived by her daughters, Carol, and Thomas Paine of Blair, NE; Deborah and Frank Brooks of Hastings, NE; son, William and Lorraine Wenske of Columbus, NE; grandsons, Aaron and Angie Brooks of Lawrence, KS; Matthew and Theresa Wenske of Duncan, NE; granddaughter, Alicia Wenske of Columbus, NE; step–granddaughter, Crystal Lake of Humphrey, NE; step–grandsons, John and Nicole Wuest of O’Fallon, MO; Wayne Wuest of Monroe, NE; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin; parents, Emil and Ella Miller; sister, Anne Baumgardt; brother, Andy Miller, and grandson, Jason Brooks.
