Trumbull resident Kathleen M. “Kathy” Shafer, 68, died Friday, April 10, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, after a three year battle with ovarian cancer. Rosary was Tuesday, April 14, 7 p.m., at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, April 15, 10:30 a.m., at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Joseph M. Walsh and Father Thomas Brouillette officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery, Trumbull, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date. Book signing was Tuesday, April 14, 9 a.m- 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Private condolences may be sent at www. lbvfh.com. Kathy was born June 9, 1946, to J. LaVern and Phyllis (Brouillette) Bassett in Hastings, NE. She graduated from St. Cecilia High School in 1964, and attended St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Lincoln. She married Kenneth M. Shafer on August 20, 1966, at St. Cecilia Church. Kathy had various jobs with Montgomery Ward’s, KBS Monogramming and Trumbull Coop. She retired from Trumbull Schools and was a line dance instructor in Hastings and Grand Island for fourteen years. She was a charter member of New Dimensions Extension Club. Kathy served two terms on the Board of Directors for the YWCA and three terms on the Board of Directors of Great Plains Creative Arts and Crafts. She was an instructor at Great Plains Creative Arts and Crafts camp for thirty-four years. She was owner of Kathy’s Korner and the co-owner of Imagination Station. She was a member of St. Cecilia Church, the Altar Society and Legion of Mary. Kathy Shafer was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors: Husband, Kenneth M. Shafer of Trumbull, NE. Sons and daughters-in-laws, Scott and Denise Shafer of Grand Island, NE; Brad and Brenda Shafer of Earlysville, VA. Daughter, Brenda Elley of Hastings, NE. Grandchildren, Jenny Casper of Grand Island, NE; Heidi Kraft of Grand Island, NE; Hannah Shafer of Grand Island, NE; Caden Elley of Hastings, NE; Kyler Elley of Hastings, NE; Bradley Shafer of Earlysville, VA. Great-grandchild, Destiny Oakley of Grand Island, NE. Brother and Sister-in-law: Tom and Cathy Bassett of Republican City, NE. Numerous nieces and nephews.
