Dixie Lee Wilkerson, 69, of Clay Center, died Sunday, May 24, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island. A celebration of life service will be Thursday, at 10:30 a.m., at Clay Center Christian Church, with the Rev. Nathan Brands officiating. Dixie selflessly donated her body to be used to train future medical professionals. Memorial sare suggested to the family. She was born April 28, 1946, in Red Cloud, NE, to Ezra and Frieda (Spooner) Figgins. She attended Red Cloud
Elementary School and the First Church of Christ. Growing up in an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins was the highlight of her formative years. She especially enjoyed her time with Aunt Edna and Uncle Harvey Fogo on the farm
near Burr Oak, KA, with cousins Peggy, Glenny and Cheryl. At age 12, Dixie moved with her family to Arizona, where she graduated from Antelope Union High School in 1964. She sang alto in choir, participated in FHA and made lifelong
friendships. She accepted the Lord as her Savior at the Tacna Baptist Mission Church and was baptized along with her mother and younger sister in 1960. Dixie met Dee Wilkerson at Mohawk Elementary in Roll, AZ After marrying, they eventually moved back to Nebraska. Dee and Dixie would have celebrated 51 years of marriage on May 30. Dee and Dixie had four boys before adopting a daughter and then having another boy. They also raised 87 foster children over a 28-year period, many of whom continue to consider their mom. Dixie worked at the Clay Center School for a number of years before she became ill and received a kidney transplant in 2003. Dixie is survived by her husband, Dee, and children, Rodney and wife, Nadine, of Pauline; Nathan of Salt Lake City, UT; Curt and wife, Marsha, of Kearney; Robert of Clay Center; Courtney of Harvard; and Daniel of Clay Center; thirteen grandchildren, Britney, Trevor, Deeon, Drake, Devon, Detrick, Jayleesa, Hunter, Dominic, Savannah, DeAnna, Jay'kwan, Aydan, Amanda Smith and her husband, Mike, and Alissa and Felicca Overy, and one great-grandson, Cassen. Three brothers: Gerald and his wife, Donna; Ronald and his wife, Charlotte, all of Red Cloud; Billie Don and wife, Jessie, of Santa Maria, CA; and a sister, Bonnie Lewis and her husband, Gary, of Red Cloud; brother-in-law, J. W. Wilkerson of Wellton, AZ, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and foster children. She is preceded in death by her parents.
