Memorial Day has come and gone, so it must officially be summer in Nebraska. School is out, the public swimming pools are open and travelers are hitting the road buoyed by low gasoline prices and frustration with the TSA and airlines. This holiday, which became an official federal holiday in 1971, started out as Decoration Day after the Civil War, back in 1868. Give credit to the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, IL, for designating it as a time to decorate graves of the war dead with flowers.
